Millennium Electrical

This project lasted about two years and involved four Electricians, and two Apprentice Electricians. The work included the Installation of cable containment, VSD installations and field devices connections. Additionally, there were two Automation Engineers responsible for the Software Engineering, SCADA development, PLC programming and commissioning of the station. This project provided valuable experience for the Apprentice Electricians, allowing them to gain some Industrial Sign offs for their electrical apprenticeships.

Jeffreys Pump Station began as a revamp/recondition job but evolved into a near complete rebuild with the exception of a main switchboard shell within a refurbished pump room. It was commissioned in mid-2023 with the collaboration of our in-house Automation team and electricians, along with other contractors such as Seipp Construction, WaterForce and Sorted Water Solutions.

Key Information:

Title Jeffreys Fresh-Water Pump Station
Type Contract Services & Automation
Role Subcontractor - Electrical Contracting & Automation
Head Contractor Seipp Construction Ltd
Client Christchurch City Council

Project Size

  • 6x New Variable Speed Drives, Auto, Off, Manual Control boxes and Harmonic filters
  • 2x Pumped wellheads, each with control panels
  • 2x Pumped artesian/bermad wellheads, each with control panels and valve control panels
  • 2x Reticulation pumps each with control panels
  • 1x Active power filter
  • 1x Scada/PLC panel
  • An existing Main switchboard revamp
  • Various controls, sensors, flow switches, flow meters, pressure transducers, and level transducers in order to aid the automatic operation of the station with use of a Programmable Logic Controller

Complexity Managed

A layout designed to reuse existing cabling and some pump VSDs, proved to be unfit for purpose. Having to adapt and redesign layouts, electrical drawings, and automation programming to accommodate additional requests and equipment beyond what was originally planned, all while ensuring the highest quality of work and functionality.

During the commissioning we worked alongside CCC network operators and got the site running autonomously into the local water network.

Project Outcomes

The station is now incorporated in the Christchurch water network, providing fresh water to thousands of households, while also providing a large backlog of stored water to allow for undisturbed pumping to this network.
